Women's Wednesdays is an original art project by Ronnie which features internationally capped women's rugby players (chosen from his followers' suggestions each week).
Original mixed media artwork by Ronnie McInnes No.13 - Emily Scarratt © 2020.
Women's Wednesdays is about doing something in my power to help raise the profile of women in sports, particularly rugby. Partly influenced by Pop Surrealism, I usually tie something into the narrative that has been inspired by video games.
The artwork was made by using a combination of long exposure (light painting) photography and digital art techniques. This is the thirteenth piece from the project and features English rugby player - Outside Centre - Emily Scarratt.
I picked Donkey Kong as my inspiration for that week because it is one of many video games that features a damsel in distress. Women and girls have long been presented in video games as weak, helpless and in need of saving. I reject all that and do so openly with this artwork. Emily is amazingly skilled, fierce, strong and at the absolute top of the game of rugby, as far removed from a damsel in distress as you can get.
I present Emily doing some kicking practice in a makeshift gym space and have stacked up the Donkey Kong style platforms (like she actually did with pallets) and made a chin up bar with ladders styled from the game. I put a barrel to our left with a Mary Berry style cake on top. I finished by adding some lightning, to represent Loughborough Lightning.
Each artwork from the series is available to download for free and can be used for personal, non-commercial and educational purposes. For example a device screensaver or poster print (up to A3 size) for your wall.
